I remember vividly, when my daddy got serious about a relationship with the Lord, saying life in “Bible times” was terrible. God told them what to do and what He was going to do when they didn’t obey. He is so patient with us until he’s done. Could be confusing. Is. How do we explain this?

When reading the prophets, I often feel convicted. I know that I, too, have been guilty and God's anger and judgment are frightening! I'm grateful that in the midst of the judgment there are glimpses of the loving God we know -- glimpses of comforting, of forgiveness, of redemption, of love. Without those glimpses one would wonder if it was even the same God! We are so fortunate to be living in the time of God's favor, to be able to have seen the character of God revealed in Jesus. God isn't capricious. He is holy, which entails purity. So he isn't like us, sometimes one way and sometimes another, depending on our mood. Although sometimes it may seem like it. Often it comes down to the "why", which we often do not know. When I read Hosea 6:1 -- ("Come, let us return to the Lord. He has torn us to pieces but He will heal us; He has injured us, but He will bind up our wounds.") -- it sounds like a pretty scary God. But surgery may "tear us to pieces" and "injure" us, but the goal is not injury but healing. It still hurts though. Not all that hurts harms, and not all that feels good is helpful.
